are academics often like lawyers, just paid experts?

I'm posting this here because it's an academic board and some sites I've seen such as Wikipedia on COG/TFI just as some reporters seem to be describing a balanced view is to write articles with minor admissions, gross minimization in the name of balanced "academic" view. A doctorate in theology certainly wouldn't make someone necessarily capable of writing a "neutral" view based on education, research of studied subject etc, but they can certainly be hired to write favorable articles on the HDO or give paid "professional" opinions in courts of law. Ariel Castro was given life plus a thousand years for what he took from the lives of the three females he held in captivity. The law went after Warren Jeffs, but I highly suspect hands have been off Maria and other perps because of the scandalous connections in high places both domestic and abroad during all those years of targeting city fathers, military, and people in high places.you can't do what she has done and go Scott free because "oh look at all the changes we have made." Any academics out there with any thoughts on this?
