I never experienced this in the Family, but I'd belonged to another religious cult which hid children from parents. I recall one incident, where a fellow lived in our household with his little boy. The boy was about 7 at the time. The man did not have legal custody of the kid. The Mom did. The dad claimed that the Mom was a drug addict, and not a fit parent. Every one knew that the only reason he kept the kid was because he wanted the boy. Also, the boy was being raised in 'the truth.' So, no one interfered. No one contacted the authorities.
It's sad that religious groups do this. They think "Oh, so and so if raising the kid in the truth. It doesn't matter that we're breaking the law by hiding him."
But that's how it goes! Been there and done that!
