Here is a url with descriptions of different types of depression and suggested causes. I do not see the connection with Major Depression and unrealistic attitudes and irrational beliefs. Quite often MDD is triggered by traumatic events but not necessarily. When those chemicals you refer to in the brain (seretonin and dopamine, and another u didn't mention, norepinephrine) are depleted or are out of order, MD can occur, but there are many kinds of depression. Sometimes options are limited according to insurance plans and finances.
A qualified therapist who is conservative about having medicated clients should be able to recognize if a person might benefit from additional help such as psychiatric consultation for possible medical treatment of their illness as well.
