Price-wise, it would be hard to beat taking a Greyhound. If your son buys his ticket 7 days in advance, the price from Austin to Minneapolis is $69 (non-refundable, but it can be changed to a different date for a $10 fee). No sales tax.

Passengers have to manually transfer their luggage at each bus change/layover. He is allowed 2 free pieces, weighing a total of 100 lbs. Extra pieces can be brought on for $15 each.

It's a long trip - 24-30 hours, and he will be tired and in dire need of a shower when he gets there. The one caution I have been given is that he not wander around the area outside the terminal. Meals will have to be bought at cafés or from vending machines inside.

There are decent people who travel by bus, because they don't have the money to fly; there are also some "undesirables".

Email me if I can be of any further help. There are also some helpful exers in Minneapolis.
