Intellectual property and copyright laws are a confusing mess, especially as it applies to online publication. That is the reason I've advised NDN to avoid it.
There have been a few occasions where Barney has asked me to put something on the site, and I've advised him to get written permission first, and send me the original. I'm still waiting...
If we (NDN) did get nailed on anything, I would probably argue "fair use". We aren't selling the information, or preventing them from profiting from the work. I might argue that we are legally a ministry and are using the material to educate those we minister to (a concept already accepted under fair use).
I think the whole thing is definately arguable, but nobody wants to pay a lawyer to argue it. So, it seems easier to avoid it by taking down publications when they ask.
This board has taken a different approach, and I am watching with great interest. If The Family does not attempt to protect the copyright, then the next logical assumption would be that the material is in the public domain.
