I don't get it. First you are a window to them to show them what life is like on the outside.. You have thrown a rope. Then you say you don't care if they ever leave. Personally, if I had a good friend that was hooked on heroin, I would invite them to dinner, I would never give them money or services to enable their use, and I would always be trying to help them, even if it involved shutting the door (physical) to them, letting them know my heart was open but I could not bear to be a part of their destructive lifestyle. I would however help them anytime they chose to stop, and assist with finding a treatment center, because they would need that to get on their feet.
Another thing is that it is largely adult, if not all, ex-members that post here. So if you have no empathy for ex-members that joined as legal adults (what, starting at age 18?), and lump all that together,well.. I agree with the battered women's syndrome comparison. It is damaging to tell someone who has been in abusive situations as an adult (such as this) "You could have just gotten out." "Why did you get involved with that monster to begin with?" "Why didn't you just leave?"
