I agree with how you presented. There is room for plenty of self-preservation when re-writing history and so we can easily blame others and come up with good arguments. The main difference between those two views in this conversation is that of perspectives. Some see it as a matter of responsibility while others see it as a matter of survival. On top of that there is the emotional baggage we all carry and, as we can see, not everybody is ready or willing to take responsibility.

On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with having strong instincs to defend one's self and there is a time when we just have to close the door, walk away and not turn back to examine our actions objectively. Sometimes we cannot and should not be objective; more so when we are in survival mode. What is wrong is to continue being in that mode, but that is very hard to do and totally another subject.
