i visited db's environs several times in the late 70's. he did live in a quirkishly austere manner. in one location, which was a walled mansion really, rented from a fish for far below it's market value, all the beautiful furnture was covered w/ sheets, they ate on a pingpong table in the rec room rather then the luxurious dining room. at that time at least the way that money was wasted was not on luxury, but paranoid security measures, (needing high walls etc.) and moving at great expense whenever a security threat was percieved. on another visit he took the bus everywhere, dressed in kmart style, and once lectured juan during the visit that he should buy cologne with smaller holes so that it would last longer. things may have changed after that, i was shortly thereafter personna non grata. but personally, i don't believe that desire for luxury was a leading factor in his abberational world. if that had been it, we all would have gotten away more intact, imo. lust proved far more damaging than greed.
