There are plenty of recent examples where the U.S. sent troops into foreign battles for unselfish motives. Haiti, Yugoslavia, BosniaandCosovo had no minerals, oil, or strategic interest for the U.S. We sent troops to fight and die to liberate the oppressed people of those countries.
I agree with you that the 3000 pound gorilla must behave in a benevolent manner with the rest of the world. I believe that weighed in the balance of history, the U.S. has done more good than evil.
