The mark is dependence, fostered and maintained strongly on those who are valued, WS workers, leaders with more freedom to move, kings and supporters, for example. Not that street walkers are not valued but they are clearly not at the same level and certainly not for the same reasons. Nevertheless, regardless of their status there is a basic threshold of comfort that is provided even for them.

If you look into your memories, I am sure you will recognize how some were more "equal" than others but the drawback is that they were also more "slaves" because they were more dependent. As the supply thinned due to losing power to somebody else, or whatever whims of those "above", the effects also thinned and eventually vanished.

This dependence down's have to be the same for every body. It might have been power, sex, food, playing in a band, drawing cartoon or any other form of feeling self importance.
