The 20 years you refer to of their "being nobodies" is supposed to do what, exactly, for the consequences to those affected of their leadership stints?

I should also point out that The Family put a lot of people through "retraining" and it was sometimes with a view to putting the retrainees back in power, perhaps more now that they were "broken vessel" enough or whatever that they would do whatever those above them said. Though it does sound from what you wrote that they perhaps did not react in the way the "retrainess" who may later be re-exalted are supposed to.
