I was commending the poster for making the effort without excusing himself. Now I need to re-read what he said, to make sure that my impression on what he said was valid.

It's complex, there's a lot at work. First of all, the waters are muddy, you wish you could live that past all over again. In my case I was dysfunctional, vulnerable and drugged out when I joined the F., and was soon to become an alcoholic while within the group. All the while believing I was a "little David", as we were taught to believe, therefore a "prophet" in my own right and soon to be a King and Priest in the Milleniun, that's dysfunctional enough but there was so much more. There was "the man wears the pants" which didn't help the dysfunctional relationship I had with my wife. Basing child-rearing and daily living on "The Life With Grandpa" books, nothing but more dyfunction, or two sheets of toilet paper ...and the list goes on.

So explaining muddy waters is not easy to do, because while doing so, some people will make excuses, and even if they don't, it can sound like they're making excuses.
