"A Northwest Side woman who videotaped herself performing sex acts on her 10-month-old son offered no explanation for her actions yesterday as she pleaded guilty to rape.

Ashley N. Jessup, 25, of Camden Circle, was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for at least 15 years.

She sniffled and wiped her eyes and nose with tissues throughout the hearing in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. Asked by Judge Pat Sheeran if she wanted to make a statement, she paused and consulted with her attorney, Eric Brehm, before telling the judge that she had nothing to say.

“The court is at a complete loss to explain how this could have happened,” Sheeran said. He called it “one of the most-unusual cases” he has seen in more than 30 years as a lawyer, magistrate and judge.

Jessup sent the videos to her boyfriend in Battle Creek, Mich., where his ex-girlfriend discovered them on his computer and contacted police on Aug. 31, 2011. The videos depicted Jessup performing oral sex on the baby and placing his hand on her genitals, Assistant County Prosecutor Daniel Hawkins said.

The boyfriend, Jordan Russell, 24, was sentenced in June to three to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to child sexual-abusive computer activity in Calhoun County, Mich., Circuit Court. Investigators said he encouraged Jessup to commit the acts and videotape them.

He is not the child’s father. The child, now nearly 2, is in the custody of a grandmother.

Brehm said Jessup understands that what she did was wrong, and “her concern is for the well-being of the child, as strange as that may sound.”

He had contemplated a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity plea, but two Netcare psychologists examined Jessup and determined that she is not mentally ill.

The sentence was recommended by the prosecution and defense as part of the plea agreement. She could have been sentenced to life with no chance of parole had she been convicted at trial.

If she is released from prison, Jessup will be required to register as a sex offender every 90 days for the rest of her life, the judge said."
