Thank you for the words of appreciation. I, too, found these ideas thought provoking.
Maybe “haters” was a little stronger and maybe another word showing antagonism might have been better, but could not think of anything mild. After all, the article uses strong nouns and adjectives to make sure that there is no confusion about the author’s dislike of fundamentalist (crackpots, in the second paragraph is a good example). Maybe I am just unfamiliar with that cultural use of language. That’s why I mentioned my discomfort about “political undertones”. I do get the same reaction when fundamentalists use similar names on their detractors, so it is not a matter of picking sides.
I found the essence of the article pertinent because we have some expertise on at least one cult. The description sounded too familiar to pass. In fact, over my time living in states I met quite a few Christians unbelievably fixated in their constitution. I never judged them but this article helped me view these attitudes under a new light. Apparently not all Christians are fundamentalists and not all fundamentalists are fanatic religious extremists, yet some are.
