Yesterday, I was reading some news blogs and one in particular reminded me of this interesting discussion you are having here. I would post a link to it, but its political nature probably wouldn't pass the screening here. The main point the blogger was making is that the Bible is not America's holy book, but that the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence are its "holy" books. He writes: "The Bible may be America's most symbolically holy book for many people. But that is only within the context of American civil religion." (see "civil religion" on wikipedia)
I understand this blogger to mean something different than those who believe that the Constitution is a holy book in the sense of being sacred. Sorry if I'm coming out of left field with this, I just thought it was an interesting idea to consider in light of this conversation.
