You make an excellent point. During the 2004 US election, I truly felt like the civic religion in this country had reached cultic proportions, inasmuch as there was a near hysterical regurgitation of the "values and morals" talking points being generated by the election committees of the two political parties. I say "regurgitation" because I didn't hear a lot of critical thinking about the big picture, which we're facing today the same as two years ago. Only now, we're beginning to realize we're all in this thing together regardless of who gets elected. It's not "us" versus "them," as in the cult versus the world, and God is not a Democrat OR a Republican.
