What I found most helpful about this post is the discussion of the term "fundamentalist." I've been confused by that term because it is used so broadly, such as Islamic fundamentalism instead of Islamic militant.

I was a little startled by Radio Man's remark that he thought all Christians were fundamentalist. The way I see it, a big sticking point between conservative evangelical Christians and those who might be called progressive or Red Letter Christians is disagreement over what "the inerrancy of scripture" means. All Christians would agree that scripture is divinely inspired, but the doctrine of "inerrant" scripture seems very much to me like the doctrine of papal "infallibility" when speaking ex cathedra.
