I think it was Swede or someone else who first posted some time ago about humor, and I looked it up. It is true that people can laugh about anything except something that is sacred to them. Thais will not take jokes about their king, and Muslims will declare a fatwah if you write something satirical like the "Satanic Verses." Yet in the West we have The Da Vinci Code, and Dan Brown hasn't been sentenced to death, as far as we know anyway. I remember one of the first Jesus jokes I heard, and it bothered me so bad.
We all have certain things we cannot laugh about. In a way knowing what you can and can't laugh about is a gauge on where you're at, what you hold dear to you. I can no longer laugh at boat refugee jokes, because I've seen and met refugees.
