Vegetarianism in Australia is mostly associated with annoying people who say they are vegetarian but its ok to eat chicken as long as you say thank you to the chicken? I do have one Muslim vegan friend though. He is one of the best people on the planet and not annoying at all and would never eat chicken. :)
That reminds me of something funny. There is a very funny Australian Chinese guy in my Mandarin class and a very annoying 'mature age hippy student' asked the teacher how to say 'im a vegetarian' in Chinese. This funny guy piped up and said 'there's no such word in Chinese'. Everyone laughed and she was really pissed off.
Doesn't sound that funny? I guess you had to be there.
