It seems like scare tactics to me to assume that questioning and scepticism lead to negative and 'evil', though you aren't the first person I've heard this from. A close Christian family member said to me that if he were ever to arrive at the belief of no God, then he would have to either kill himself to "get out of this hell hole we humans have created", or to live exclusively for himself without any moral guidelines. To me these are very sad extremes that ignore a lot of good in between. And i cannot be painted with any of those brushes... neither as a believer or suicidal or without moral guidelines, so he is also choosing to ignore things that don't support his view.
After living through much control and scare tactics in the family and seeing it repeated to lesser degrees but with similar motivation in religions in regular society, i choose to believe what makes sense to me and discard what doesnt, without the scare tactics.
