I am sure you recognize that diseases don't target according to sin. You may consider a route of exposure a "sin", like shooting drugs and getting exposed, but you could have been a RN who got a needle stick and gotten the same disease. In the family, both the RN and the drug abuser would be blamed unless top leadership (in berg's favor) because it wouldn't have been allowed by God if something wasn't "wrong with you". If a top leader, then the devil would be trying to stop your important work.
I know you know that, so not preachin' atcha here. Just thinking about how the Family did attribute illness or injury to the devil (if you were top leadership) and to the parent or the person if you were average member. That was certainly no laughing matter. I think probably a high percentage of parents were dealt with at some time or other, when their children were sick or got an injury, even if not in the parents direct care. I know I experienced that.
Also, I know that many denominations of pentecostal and charismatic varieties believe that diseases are demons and a person with an illness is under attack or yielded to Satan.
I believe you, that none of the PhD people you know subscribe to that belief because they are highly educated and most would not operate on a level of magical thinking like that.
What I can appreciate, is that after TF, whether some become Christian, or atheist or other belief, we were all in that hamburger meatgrinder boat together and we got out! For that, I am truly grateful.
I do realize too, that when a person leaves a destructive cult, sometimes they are attracted to something similar on the outside. That is how I wound up with different jobs where bosses were cult like or a situation had similar dynamics.
I wonder how many exers here experienced that?
