The common thread doesn't seem to be religion as much as personalities that are distorted and wreak havoc on people that are under them (in subjection to them as followers or as prisoners).
Every religion has likely had it's share of fanatics that used religion to gain power or to rationalize their power, only to delve into and make doctrine or law from their sick psyches.
There are Christian nuts, Buddhist nuts, Atheist nuts, Hindu nuts, Nut nuts- that go out and form cults or take over governments in the name of religion with themselves at the center of the world. I don't think Hitler was a Catholic any more than I believe that David Berg was a Christian. I think there are spiritual people- people with good minds who are not power hungry and personality disordered, and that includes many "humanists" and Atheists.
So I'd say Hitler was not Catholic at all.
