I have no musical training, I just know what I like, but I think I catch your drift. These are all really good; will keep me busy for a while exploring them further.
Yes, I tend toward the jazzier and bluesy stuff, though I can't really say any genre is my favorite. What I really like is when different genres are fused so that it becomes difficult to label it. And some of the best music I've heard is at folk and jazz festivals when different artists start jamming together, with amazing unexpected results. The Vancouver Jazz Festival, for example, is noteworthy for its extremely broad definition of jazz, which accommodates artists that some purists think don't qualify as jazz.
There's a good cd set of compilations called Ambiances Du Sahara, which features many different artists from Northern Africa, accompanied in some cases by North American artists like Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal.
