& at times taking pictures of it...never so beautiful as the original

Bringing heaven on earth

AHMEDABAD: It was an unreal sight. Alvaro Urbano, an installation artist from Madrid, walked around the congested streets of old Ahmedabad on Friday with a full-size mirror tilted at 45 degrees tied to his back and reflecting the blue sky. It seemed as if a small portion of the sky and drifting clouds had landed on the busy streets. As if Alvaro was carrying a bit of the sky on his back.

Passers-by smiled, stopped him and asked what he was up to. He told them he just wanted to show them a little bit of the sky!

Quirky as this may sound, Alvaro and his two friends — architect Daniel Fernandez and musician Borja Conde — are not junkies on a high. They have launched ‘Project Sky’ — which questions the concrete jungle that cities have become.

They have taken their ‘walking mirror’ to New York, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Mumbai and will soon sign off their world tour with London. The entire journey will be turned into a documentary and book.

Their concern is that man is increasingly living in large cities with so many skyscrapers that he can’t even see the sky any more. That his existence is increasingly becoming machine-like and inorganic.

“By 2050, 75 per cent of the world’s population will be living in large cities,” says Daniel. “And they will see more buildings and advertisement banners than the sky. Do we really want to live in cities where we can’t even afford a small garden of our own, a small patch of sky?”
