Remember the story about the old prophet and the new prophet? God told the young prophet to do something that contradicted what He had told the old prophet. When the old prophet minded what the young prophet told him, he was condemmed and killed... and the young prophet himself delivered that message. Likewise, saying that God will never do such type of things, unless it is specifically written, sounds too much like we know better.
I am not justifying the deceptions and manipulations so prevalent in the family, Berg made a carreer of manipulating the exceptions of God, but God is very well able to make exceptions. I respect somebody's beliefs that he or she didn't need to go through the family to get close to God, it might even be possibly true for a great bunch of people but even if by contempt or deception the Word was preached by some individuals.
I don't know if I would consider the present day family part of God's field, but why not? God is not limited by memberships or boundaries of any kind. He has blessed humanity as a whole and not selectively by groups, kinds or classes. The turning point comes when we, individually, hear God's voice like Samuel did and follow that voice. I fail to see how God's voice could not lead some people into the belly of some monster.
