I faced the same question & others 4 years back...if you google about that subject, you find the better arguments on the side of becoming & staying one, one man, one woman, something else is not mentioned in Genesis...a swiss christian woman made me realise that 8 years back, that in the beginning, there was no such thing as several "eves" & since Jesus refers to Genesis, it'd be better to really regard deeply all the implications.
Further it means in accordance with Paul, that while the mate is still alive, there is no possibility to marry again (& even if he/she dies, some rather stayed single in the early centuries & later, there is some ambiguity in the advice of Paul, almost like for the sake of the flesh it's better to remarry for the younger widows, but seeming like the second best??!)...in the realm of the kingdom of God...even if society allows that....there it pays IMO to rather obey God than seeking the wisdom of men...
I think it's possible to split from an abusive errant unloyal, adulterous/fornicating mate for selfprotection & that of the own children, but also in hopes of reconciliation after the repentance of the erring mate...if someone marries in that situation, the marriage is permenantly broken.
What could we answer the Lord?
Also in the advice regarding the deacons & elders of the church it really speaks of one & only one...In TF I read: if you have two apples, you also have one apple....but you really have more than one...and in math, 2 equals not 1 in the integer set...from all I know about the Greek there, it's meant the number one & not two or more...not even zero!
