know part of my taste ; )...even if I am not sure, if that could be meaningful for you too?
Anyway, I rather sit with some handkerchief through a bollywoodmovie, than cringing in suspense watching a thriller or whatnot...if you'd tell me that triangle/romance movies are lost on you, I would have to recommend other ones...I did already mention earlier some like monsoon wedding, Salaam Bombay etc. which are more like the European/Italian old neorealism-movies...
Anyway, here is a movie, I've watched lately and which ending I've now seen repeatedly a couple of dozen times : ) seriously...it's touching to me the "farewell to the ashes", death-ceremony, good bye to a loved one...someone shot innocently by crooked police, trying to curb the Sikh-terrorism...he had fled to America (The scene with the bridge in America in the video is also very symbolic to me), been given also political asylum, but came back for the wedding of his sister, where he was spotted at the marriage function...they say the movie is sort of biographical, but I haven't found in the internet yet, which family they portrayed. As I have lived in India at that time & also have been in Delhi, when they shot Indira Gandhi ( later "witnessing" the riots, blood-shed among many civilians), also having been shortly mated to a Punjabi girl, that is why this is probably a bit more special to me ...but I like the "farewell"scene to the ashes of the loved one very much, the acting/mourning of "his sister" is excellent IMO (it's just a down to earth farming family [Punjab is the wheat/nutrition bowl of India] especially since she's so joyful in the rest of the movie before...nice & cruel things happen in this movie & it's close to the real events of that time...the words of the song at the end are also touching...concealed partly by a link though in the video...white is the burial-colour in India (that's why many hesitate/refuse to wear that at any other occasion), in some movies you see at the time of the pyre, a pot/vessel being broken & cast over the shoulder of some friend/relative, as ceremony-witness, there are so many typologies in their daily life, it's quite something...I have the feeling, that much in India comes from some ancient semitic source...I have searched the web & found some good confirmation along the line.
Anyway this movie has for me a lot...most/many movies have a reference to fate & God in some form...I am not sure, if that would be a problem to you...anyway, the next link is about a better English movie data-base, because there's not even a review in the Planetbollywood one about that movie.
Des Hoya Pardes
after the video loaded down to you (red bar) , you could set/ forward (marker) to 5:37, to see the scene which I mean....I think, they have all or most of the film on youtube...saves money ; ) ...I got my version via ebay.
The movie which started my Bollywood interest here in Germany years back, was the TV-version of Kabhi Kushi Kabhi Gham...the main plot is: adopted son of a super rich family refuses to marry the choice of the father & marries rather clandestinely the daughter of a lowely sweets-vendor, thereby risking the schism/split in the family...making mother & brother to suffer for that...the end is very significant, as the mother pleads/preaches in a very special, intelligent way with her husband...him admitting later to fault, rare as being the "godly" family tycoon & asking his sons for forgiveness is in my eyes pretty significant, as I myself am also of the older generation (FGA), learning to take the humbler, lower seat, seeking forgiveness.I find that movie very touching...even though it has its "problems" with being at times too splashy, luxurious...may be.(I think they have most of the movie on youtube, with English subtitles...saves again money ; ) )
Next, very touching, if romance is any option, is: Dilwale dulhania le jayenge You google that or at you tube & find tons of information & videos; was running in the States too, if I remember right...& is still running in Bombay after 14 years, from what I know....the ending is super touching...the lesson is on seemingly giving up, but actually rather holding on to what you really desire...or that real love can win/melt the hardest hearts.
Vivaah
This is a movie, which I absolutely love because of the sweetness & mellowness of the main actors...romance is often in Bollywood-movies only indicated (Kissing, smooching etc.), although you have also pretty explicit movies...more often than not the virginity, the "unspoiledness" is promoted/provided in movies (then there are others, who kind of break & play with that notion)...It's often commented how they make both the prettiest movie-couple of Bollywood & I'd agree, even if there are other good matches.I think the reason I like the movie is because of the altruism displayed in the movie & that outward & inward beauty really can go together...I guess that is rather rare in the "normal world", but even in western movies.

Are there actually women so meek? Poonam is a sweet character, but I would never want to be so agreeable. If their's was a true partnership, Poonam would not be shy and awed by his kind words all the time.
This movie has its good points and I love both the actors, especially as a couple...but the attitude portrayed in scenes like this make me cringe...

but this movie is still my absolute favorite...lol poonams character is one i love, but my friends...well when u see it in real life, its not that lovable....at the end of the day this is still a movie...lol
