State Religion: Don't let people kill little unborn babies! It's a grave sin.

Big Brother: Yes, I agree! It's much better that the unborn should have life in this great country, a land of opportunity where 25% of children grow up in poverty. That's not a sin. That's natural selection. Why else would I tolerate one of the highest infant mortality rates in the developed world? Better the children of poverty should die of "natural" causes within their first year of life than die at the bloody hand of an abortionist.

State Religion: Wait a minute...could that be seen as indifference to the plight of widows and orphans? Could hardening my heart to the cry of the poor be considered a sin?

Big Brother: It might be a sin, except the "widows" aren't really widows--they're fornicators who have children ("orphans") out of wedlock. The children of fornicators deserve to grow up in poverty. That's natural selection.

State Religion: Big Brother, are you deciding who should suffer for their sins and who should not?

Big Brother: Yes, I am the right hand of God here on earth. Don't you remember how you empowered me with the scepter of divine justice when the wall of separation fell and we were joined together in our "holy" alliance? Now I am the decider. I get to decide who will be punished for offenses against God and the public order. I make sure that the bastard children of fornicators get to live, and you can rest assured that the majority of them pay for their parents' sins by growing up in poverty.

State Religion: You got a point there, Big Brother. It was Jesus Himself who said, "The poor you have with you always." Thanks, Big Brother, for upholding the laws of natural selection where a group of people always get to grow up in poverty. Better it be the bastard children of fornicators than my own chastely conceived heirs to the Kingdom.

Big Brother: No problem, State Religion. I don't want you worrying your pretty little head with the wages of sin when I'm here to take care of that for you. Now, are you ready to talk about why there is absolutely no relationship between a politically sanctioned culture of greed and 1 in 4 children living in poverty?
