I guess that Lattin had several reasons for choosing the title for his book. It kind of dates him; I suppose. He lectures at Berkely; I think, and is writing another book--it must pay fairly well. "Jesus Freaks, out in the streets, handing tickets out for God..." was part of the lyrics to "Tiny Dancer", by Elton John. "Whose freak are YOU?!" was a question asked in an early "Jesus Music" song by, I think, Larry Norman, or someone.
And, there are other perjorative uses of the term, usually in reference to Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, etc. The term is passe, anymore, even when people are mocking the American Bible Belt, conservatives, neo-cons, etc.
Berg just couldn't stand any indication that his supremacy over "all things Jesus" even existed. The Jesus movement started at least 5 years earlier than when he joined his Mommy in Huntington Beach--sorry, Mr. Pedophile False Prophet.
His thing was the johny-come-lately and demonized counterfeit to what turned into Calvary Chapel and the Vineyard movements.
I'm doing better; thanks! I have also reconciled with my Dad, who turns 83 this November. Thanks for asking.
