Since I wanted to solve this situation myself in the past I got myself plenty of good Matthew commentaries...to find out the meanings in chapter 5 and 19...the only ones relevant for that issue...emphasis...the only ones

The "hardness" of the law shows us the holiness of God...to diminish any of the sharpness of it gives also the wrong picture of HIS divineness...but under all that we break down & it drives us to Christ and His mercy...but it also makes us then to want to perform HIS will...more and more...He wants us to be holy as He is holy...pretty awesome...to diminish any of that would be wrong...
