The simple explanation would be that eternal salvation is a state with a beginning but without an end. Then your explanation that we are placed on earth and given a choice amy be valid. In this case then there is only one choice that is critical and all the other choices are irrelevant.
If that is the case, I fail to see the need to continue living past that point in time when we make that one choice.
