I think Josh McDowell's book is great too. Really very convincing proofs. Josh believes in the Young Earth creation and he's got his good arguments. Where Josh does the best in the book you described is to show the archaeological and historical accuracy of the Bible, which was the original question.
However, re: "how old is the earth?" there are some sincere Christians who are scientists who believe in Old Earth creation and they have their reasoning too. In other words, they believe the days of Genesis are ages/eras, but that God, not evolution, created all things.
I know our knee-jerk reaction (taught to us by Berg)is to think of these people as deceived heretics, but the truth is that they are genuine Christians who simply have a different interpretation. A guy named Philip E. Johnson wrote a book called "Darwin on Trial" that basically shreds evolutionary reasoning, yet Johnson believes in Old Earth creation. I highly recommend it.
