I like the way you put this: "Sort of like a mental airing out my troubles and then thinking about all possible or desired solutions."
I do that with things when I go for my walks, and if it's a situation that needs some kind of input from me to be resolved then things will fall into place and I know what to do.
I don't like to think of it as hearing" a still small voice". Since I started my recovery from the Family I'm allergic to the idea that "He will tell you to do exactly this or that." So often this leads to people saying that they KNOW what God's will is for someone else, because "the Lord showed me". The Family was so big on that, in fact too many Christians are.
The "Lord showed me" thing also makes it very difficult for anyone else to give that person any good-solid-horse-sense advice which they may direly need, "But the Lord told me...", so they don't listen.
