I don't know if the theory came out of Germany tho I believe that it did. Yes, I question redactive German thinking as well, but for me the case rises or stands on its own merits, not who thought of it first, and I believe it does have merits.
For me the existence of Q as an early WRITTEN record helps guard the authenticity of the words of Jesus. If Q didn't exist and John at age 90 was forced to recall long speeches by Jesus (John 17), then who's to say he'd rememeber correctly after 60 years. He either had a fanatastic total recall memory (not likely), or was wingin' it (so why produce a gospel based on wingin' it?) or some form of Q/Quelle written record existed.
