The thing that impressed me the most was how he got a burn scar from the fire poker that time. I enjoyed his book at the time.

I since have a somewhat different view of Tibetan Buddhism. It's actually just about the most "impure" form of Buddhism. Buddha didn't believe in any gods, but the only way Buddhism could conquer Tibet was for the Tibetans to say that their demon gods had themselves converted to Buddhism (!) and were now the guardians of this new faith.

Chinese Buddhism is very "impure" as well. Forget about disappearing into Nirvanah! They even have Buddhists going to heaven and hell. Which goes to show, even a religion as athiestic as Buddhism just can't keep away from the deep primitive beliefs in heaven and hell.
