I'm with you about how fear connected with endtime scriptures was used to control us in the Family. In the church world, it's not as bad, but it's still there, and it's still used to fuel the sales of books and movies like "Left Behind", and, earlier, "Late, Great Planet Earth", etc. I'm not sure Berg (or LaHaye or Lindsey) realized that they were using a "tactic", but the end result is the same.
Some might say that my partial preterism is an overreaction to all of this, but reading the books you mentioned, I see real harm as having been done to the cause of Christ by this kind of interpretation of prophetic events, and deep disillusionment and frustration, not just to us, but to people of just about every generation sinc the time of Christ.
