Actually the Law did provide some measure of protection for women that the Patriarchs didn't. This disfuntioanal bunch that became the "Fathers of Faith" came from the world around them where women had few rights if any. But your're right, it didn't offer much. Nor did it offer much for slaves or the poor, orphans etc.

It's my observation after having raised a few kids that during the difficult teen years there are few restrictions that can be made that will change much of anything about the choices they make. A few hard and often well worn rules only bring some measure of safety that maybe they will survive until they wake up and become human beings again. HA! It's like thay have to want more than freedom before life, love, family and the deep changes of putting others as priorty (often a child)can really effect them.

Maybe God is like a parent of some really strong willed kids who put boundries to protect them through the unredeemable years. That was the point of the cross, to provide a place of healing for the heart.

Jesus often rebuked the Pharasees ( a sour bunch they were) for twisting the law to their own benifit, like how they treated thier parents, widows, the sick and unclean and sort of every one but their own little power circle. Humm? Sound familiar?

Paul said of the Law that it was like a tutor or a school master to bring us to Christ. Jesus final prayer for the disciples and the Body of Christ was that the world would know that Jesus was really sent by God and that the world would know God loved them by the oneness of the Body of Christ with God and with one another, A goal we all fall short of daily. But, another of God's ideals with great purpose.
