Yes to a certain extent I agree about the mind control but basically people stay in the Family until the bad outweighs the good. Something drew them to the Family lifestyle and it wasn't just the dogma. In many instances it is/was the lifestyle that hooks people in.
Adults did and still do have a choice about staying. Its the children born into the Family that had no choices.
