The key would seem to be: Don't "defile" and "despise" what other people call sacred.
I do not "despise" the fundamentalist or evangelical world view. I am fearful of the repression that some folks in those camps seem willing to promote in the name of gawd and country. The excesses of John Ashcroft come to mind. I am truly afraid that the establishment of a theocratic state is at the core of the militant, right-wing Christian political agenda.
