is what an incredibily huge ego Berg had. He was such an egomaniac that he would believe such a thing about himself. I think your last paragraph sums it up pretty good. I don't think he could have ever been saved in the first place, as you also suggest, or else he would never have been able to carry out the things he did with any kind of a conscience. I think he was so full of himself that he ended up with the O.J. syndrome, believing all the lies that he fabricated about himself. Notice how O.J. never did go looking for his wife's killers as he stoicly promised he would? The denial in these people is incredible.
