I have to say I think George has (as usual) some excellent point, and I would like to contribute a small empirical case in point: as a 'woman' I am glad I was born at this particular time in history than at ANY other time.
50% of the world population is women. At least today there are SOME parts of the world where I don't have to be a slave, a baby factory, and a lesser person. I have a better chance NOW than at any other time in history, for many different reasons that could be discussed.
If that is not 'better' (as opposed to...just read history...) than I don't know what is. :)
