You're right that the "Last Temptation of Christ" did not have a lot of popular appeal. It was a mediocre film with a really lame story line. In my opinion, it wouldn't have done nearly as well as it did if evangelicals hadn't overreacted and aroused public curiosity.
I don't want to see people manipulated by guilt. I hate that! And I don't want to see Jews blamed as a race for what happened to Jesus, as has happened many times. But I also don't want to see a whitewash of history.
I wish Mel Gibson well, in spite of his Catholic belief in stigmata. Personally, I believe that Jesus bore the sins of humanity once and for all. The only action needed on our part to secure our redemption is to accept what He freely offers. But the film can't have made much of an issue about this or it wouldn't have received the approval of the protestants who saw the advance screenings.
