Mark Twain said something related to this. I can't give an exact quote, so I'll paraphrase:

When I was a young man, I used to think that my father was just about the stupidest man that ever walked the earth. Then I went out into the world to live on my own. I learned many lessons in the school of hard knocks, and became a wise man.

When I later returned to visit my parents, I was amazed to see the change in my father. Where once I saw an ignorant man, I now saw a man so full of wisdom. How on earth could such an ignorant man have become so wise in just one year?
