I think this came from the Good Thots books. I also love the urban legends web sites, and am (still) amazed at how almost every single story in those books was completely bogus. (Remember the "Missing Day", the "Screams from Hell: Heard by Soviets Geologists", the "Phone Call from God", the "Satanic Roots of Proctor and Gamble" etc?--Absolute nonsense)

One thing I absolutely love about the internet is the ability to instantly check facts online. I don't know how many times have I heard someone pontificating about something and taken their word for it. Not any more. I can check the facts for myself, and usually they have no idea what they are talking about.
