I remember the words that Jesus said..."No man can come to me except the Father draw him." Also the story he told about Lazarus the beggar and the rich man...the rich man pleaded that God send someone back from the dead to convince his family of the existence of heaven and hell, but was told that if one didn't believe Moses or the phrophets, they wouldn't believe even if one came back from the dead.
But the physical evidence of archeology, historians, manuscripts, and eyewitness accounts of miracles, etc. are still important. There are plenty of examples of the apostles using logic and reason as part of their approach to share the Gospel. You mentioned C.S. Lewis, and he is a good example of a 20th Century Christian who reached many intellectuals with the Gospel by the application of God-given logic. Just look at his book titled "Mere Christianity."
Josh McDowell has written a number of great books that use evidence and logic. One in particular titled "Evidence that Demands a verdict" has been loaned to non-Christian friends of mine, and they became Christians as a result of that book. Like Paul wrote..."One sows, another waters, but God gives the increase." The Lord has chosen to use people to carry out his will, and He uses our intellect, talents, and reasoning to reach others.
