In the analogy I used, the buyers do not have a recourse to get their investment back. It is a comparison to what actually happened to a large number of immigrants that came to America 100 yrs ago more or less. They had no protections. It is absolutely a con in the worst sense with grave losses.
They were vulnerable and the landlords knew it. And they exploited it. The results were often devastating.
I do not feel good about myself as a result of what happened in the family. I feel better about myself as a result of getting therapeutic help after getting out of the family. Did you ever watch the film "Fearless" with Jeff Bridges and Isabelle Rossellini? The people in a horrific airplane crash that survived what took the lives of many had a very special bond. One lady blamed herself extensively for the death of her baby. Self-blame was futile and caused a deep despair and depression in her to the point of being very suicidal. She cannot let that go and would very possibly have died had it not been for the intervention of someone else that survived the wreck. Another person reacts by being numb and feeling invulnerable. If you haven't seen it, I guarantee you it will be well worth the rental.
I will say that I think my analogy was good. :)
