At the Gallery where I work we have just had the Tibetan Nuns of Kathmandu for three days making a sand mandala for world peace. They worked on this masterpiece for three days, it was absolutely beautiful. Then when they finished they dumped it in the sea!
I also learnt that Tibetan Buddhists are not vegetarian.
The nuns were raising money for a water project for their monastery in Nepal. Although I have studied Buddhist theory for years the close contact with the nuns was totally different and a great experience. (By the way I am not a Buddhist). We have never had so many people visiting the Gallery and I realised how desperate people are to visit an alternative to what they have been taught in a Anglo Christian country. It was not just old hippies but middle aged,old, children you name it - we were mobbed.
