i certainly would agree that the attribute "personal" is problematic, and water that has been historically exceptionally muddied, as you point out. but i'm not sure abuse of a concept makes it any less a possible reflection of reality. i liked what cs lewis (i think) said in response to a question if he really thought the diety was a "person"...he replied that God was certainly NOT LESS than a person. as w/ most concepts when we humans try to apply it to God, we are most certainly not even beginning to scratch the surface.
"something other" certainly reflects my concept as well. but my perception of reality , in my more awake moments, is brimming over w/ both intelligent design, and an aesthetic heavily embued w/ personality! plus, i find jesus' "after this manner, pray ye, Our father, which art in heaven.." an amazingly effective entry into His presence. the profound truth of becoming like a child to SEE the kingdom , when i manage it, is self evident. "our principle, which i cannot pray to..." just doesn't have the same magic for me!
i do like the becoming thing tho...
