On the February 22 edition of CBS 60 Minutes, Andy Rooney called Mel Gibson a "wacko" and he did it while
mockingly pretending to be God.
The subject of Rooney's show-closing segment was a statement Gibson made while producing and directing his
new film "The Passion of the Christ." "The Holy Spirit,"
Gibson was quoted as saying, "was working through me."
Rooney sought to refute that notion by pretending to speak as God.
"As far as Mel Gibson goes, I haven't seen his movie, 'The Passion of the Christ,' because it hasn't opened up here
yet," Rooney, as God, said. " . . . Mel is a real nut
case. What in the world was I thinking when I created him?
Listen, we all make mistakes."
As if the above statements weren't bad enough, Rooney became even uglier during a radio interview with host Don Imus. After first calling God a creation of man and hurling insults at people of all faiths, he said the following in regards to "The Passion of the Christ" film:
"I'm not going to spend $9 just to get a few laughs."
If Andy Rooney thinks a film depicting the brutal beating and crucifixion of Christ would give him a few laughs, then he is truly a sick man. In my opinion, those are the words of a sociopath. Rooney may be on a journey, but he's headed in the wrong direction.
