As you said, we must determine if demons are real and in existence, and therefore, could he be possessed by one. I personally don't believe in the existence of demons, nor spirits, nor gods and whatnot, so I would have to say no, he wasn't.
I believe it was more mental, psychological, Berg's strict upbringing warring with his physical psyche. His desire for sex warred with his denial of the human need, and so he came up with the FFing and etc. justifications in order to satisfy his craving and assauge his guilt, or remove his guilt. I think if we tried, we could probably come up with a psychological reason for each fanatical belief he proposed and enforced in the group. Actually, Priebe may have already done this in one of his publications.
